    Wedding DJ Tips

    02 June 2011
    Doing a mobile disco for a wedding can be 1 of the most challenging but ultimately most rewarding gigs you take. As many experienced professionals will tell you there are 2 things people remember from a wedding, the first is the dress, and second is the Entertainment. Get this wrong and you can ruin the couples big day by not planning the event properly, or taking a gig when you may not quite be ready.

    Here we have put together a few short checklists to better prepare yourself. First is what you should go through with the bride and/or groom to ensure the big occasion goes as smoothly as possible;

    • The music. Weddings normally have people of all ages and musical tastes so be sure to confirm the general age ranges attending.
    • Let the couple know your equipment and ask if they have specific requests. This is also an area to add more value (or cost to your normal base rate). Things such as Up-lighting or additional PA Equipment for outdoors / extra rooms etc.
    • A well prepared DJ will know exactly what time he can set up and when to start, what time the 1st/2nd/3rd dance is and the time to cut the cake and/or throwing of the bouquet. Some brides may also have additional requests.
    • If you have previous play lists offer these at the time of discussing ages ranges and the 1st dances. Ask the couple for any other particular songs the may want and compile a list of their must plays along with the would like to play and maybe play.
    • Dress code. Do you need to come in formal wear? A football shirt and short will not go down too well with the guests so be sure to check if they require more than the usual shirt and pants.
    • Another thing becoming more common at weddings are bands and singers. If the couple have booked 1 will they provide their own sound system and lighting? If not are you comfortable with them using your equipment. Be very clear on every detail, both with the couple and if possible talk it through with the band or singer as well.
    • Prospective clients may also request References and PAT Test Certificate/Public Liability Insurance. Be sure to have these with you.

    Next we will take a look at what you need to do behind the scenes in preparation.

    • Is all you equipment up to scratch? Make sure you check all your gear at least 3-4 days before the event so you can obtain replacements for anything which may be broken or faulty. Always keep a selection of bulbs, various cables, a corded microphone, and smoke fluid. You will be surprised how often they come in handy!
    • Compile your play list well in advance, preferably as soon as you have confirmed all the details with the couple. Try to visualize or if necessary do a short rehearsal at home of how you will build up the night to create the mood and flow of the night the couple will expect.
    • Respond to any further communication with your client quickly and professionally. If you receive and email requesting a song change or slight time alteration be sure to follow up the same day where possible.
    • Plan your transport and give yourself plenty of time to get to the venue. It's better to be early than late.

    The real key to being a good wedding DJ is not about your fancy speakers and lights, your amazing suit, or the latest dance floor filler. The absolute key to a successful gig is in the planning and expectations of both you and the bride.

    Most weddings you will find are very similar in the flow of the evening, but remember, it is your job to talk with the bride and accommodate the schedule she requests. You may need to take into consideration other elements such as the schedule of meals or how long the photographer is paid to be there.

    Finally your setup should be clean and professional. The small touches such as nice table cloth or star curtain, cables nicely hidden with cable ties, and remaining calm, polite and an entertainer throughout the whole evening.

    Your 1st wedding may seem very intimidating, but by properly planning the event and knowing what to expect, it will put you in the correct frame of mind and reduce the stress levels to allow you to enjoy doing what you... Entertaining.
