Lets get straight to the point, a ridiculous
DJ Name is going to get to you nowhere in the industry or atleast in most cases not very far. If you want a Good DJ Name, take a little time to think about, because the last thing you want is 10 years down the line;
Either;
- Hating your DJ Name
- Wondering why you get no gigs
- Somebody stealing your DJ Name
- Having to ultimately change your DJ Name!
If you're still a teenager and think it's funny to pick DJ Numb Nuts because that's what your mates call you, just sit back and wonder what that will sound like when it's on a flyer, a business card or website url. Anyone who is serious about DJing as a business or career needs to look at what works and what doesn't so here's a few tips and examples.
- Most people hate the sound of their own name, but it's usually a good place to start. For mobile DJ's things such as Colin's Discos, Darren's Mobile Roadshow, or John Smith's Karaoke all sound professional and to the point. Unless you are looking for a corporate image (agency etc), the personal touch of using your real name will go a long way with customers. Real people like to deal with real people, not stage names.
- Club DJ's love the sound of really out their names. Swedish House Mafia, Deadmau5, Cosmic Gate and many more many are just a few house hold names. If you heading to the house or trance scene and produce aswell these kind of names are great, but the big DJ's in general keep it simple. Paul Van Dyke, Pete Tong, Carl Cox. If you don't like your fore or surname, maybe pick the 1 you do like and change the other.Check out the Top 100 DJ's List for inspiration.
Our big tips are;
- Don't jump into picking a name straight away. Ask other people their opinion and get a list of quite a few together.
- For Mobile DJ Names check out the Yellow Pages for tips, and to make sure you don't accidently pick the same as someone in your area.
- Check the URL is available before deciding 100%. There will be no point picking Mark The DJ, if www.markthedj.com isn't available.
- Make sure this is a name you will be happy with for life. Once you build up a reputation/contacts/following etc etc that last thing you want to do it change it.
