With so many options available nowadays to a mobile DJ which is the best? Well in my opinion it comes down what is best for you. What you feel comfortable with, what you budget can accommodate and what sort of gear you want to carry around you.
Options available for a mobile DJ;
- Laptop based (virtual DJ or coupled with a controller such as the VMS 4 etc)
- Media Player (SD Card/USB)
- CD Decks
For a new DJ, if you have quite a hefty collection of CDs already, it could prove more cost effective for to go with
CD Decks at the beginning, as you would have a large selection of music and could get straight into the game. For those who download alot of their music, it's a choice between the other 2. After numerous conversations with customers the favourite at the moment, is by the far the Laptop based systems, but many mobile DJ we find still have some sort of a backup. For those who have been in the game a while, that would seem to be a set of CD Decks, but the whole point of a Laptop based system is reducing your load and doing away with the big CD cases! The upsurge in Media Players is becoming a massive hit especially products such as the
Citronic MPCD-X3 with both CD and USB functionality.
What if you have no collection at all though? No matter what you have the outlay of the music, so it then depends on what you feel most comfortable with. If your pretty competent with a Laptop a software based system like Virtual DJ incorporating a Numark Mixtrack could be a great way to get into DJing. It gives you the hands on control of CD Decks but the flexibility of not having the CDs to carry around. If you don't trust the reliability of a Laptop though, a Media Player would be more up your street. Personally the cost of downloading tracks now seems to rule out CD Decks. CD Decks do have there advantages but in my honest opinion they are coming to the end of their life cycle for mobiles as more and more turn digital.
Citronic MPX10
If you have no budget at all, and anything is possible, then the new wave of all-in-one mix-stations such as Citronic MPX10 would be an option. Coming in at £499 at present (13 July 2011) it isn't the cheapest product on the market, but if quality, flexibility and and a wealth of features is what's needed and you are totally indecisive on what you would like and have a cool wad of cash burning a hole in your pocket,
MPX10 could answer the question for you by providing the lot all under 1 roof.
