Every DJ will at some point run into a hiccup and need a spare part on a gig, and also there’s a few items thrown in here to ensure your rig looks neat and tidy and MOSTLY safe! Here is our top 10 dj parts essentials you should keep handy.
Essential DJ Parts and DJ Spares
1. Cable ties – keep your rig tidy, NOBODY likes an untidy rig with power leads and dmx cables all over the place. PLUS it’s a health hazard as well as an eye sore.
2. Gaffa Tape – just as we don’t want any unsightly cables dangling off your rig, it’s also essential to gaffa tape all your power leads to the carpet if they are running in the way of anything. Remember, party goers will come up an ask for requests, so it’s essential your area is a trip free place!
3. Batteries – goes without saying, if you are using wireless microphones or any other battery operated dj stuff ensure you have spare batteries.
4. Which leads to, a Spare Microphone – preferably a corded version. Wireless mic’s can be temperamental so it is essential to have a back up of some sort, especially if working in hotels, where the chance that some else in another function room may be running on the same frequency you are.
5. Smoke Fluid – don’t fill it up and forget about it. Have an extra bottle just in case, you never know how much you will go through, and if the room your are working in is very high, wide etc.. you WILL use more than normal.
6. Servisol Switch Cleaner – ever turned upto a gig and you suddenly have a crackly fader? Worth having a can in your bag to get you through the night.
7. Bulbs – still using halogen fixtures that take a projector lamp of capsule? Then you definitely should have some in your arsenal of accessories.
8. Power/DMX/Mic/Speaker Cables – there’s always a cable that’s been rolled up a few too many times and keeps cutting out, or a moulded power cable plug that you can’t get in to change the fuse. These are usually the things we leave behind by accident too so it’s always good to have a spare to hand.
9. And again, this leads to Fuses! Ensure you have a selection for mains plugs, and also it’s worth having some Glass Slow/Fast Blow Fuses incase there the very worst happens and it pops 1 in your mixer or amplifier etc.
10. Tool kit – there’s nothing worse than needing a screwdriver and asking at the bar for one! Same for scissors and the like. Ensure you have a selection of tools.
